Toymakers make a positive difference for pediatric patients at TAMC’s Emergency Department
An unknown delivery man quietly comes into the Emergency Department at TAMC and hands over to the registration specialist a box of hardwood toys, about fifty handcrafted pieces of approximately 20 unique wooden shapes, all with tiny wheels and a burned ToyMakers logo on the bottom. As quickly as he comes, he turns and is off on another mission to take more boxes of toy cars and trucks to other hospitals, rehab clinics, terminal care facilities, and homeless shelters all over Maine.
TAMC’s Chief Nursing Officer earns OMNE Leadership Achievement Award
Another TAMC team member has received recognition as a leader in his field from the OMNE-Nursing Leaders of Maine. Roland Joy, MSN, BSBA, RN, and vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer, earned the 2015 Leadership Achievement Award from the organization.
Ten-year-old who rallies community to support County cancer patients named Ashland Area Citizen of the Year
The long Fourth of July Holiday weekend was a special one for ten-year-old McKenna Condon of Portage. After receiving attention earlier this year for donating money she collected, totaling $400, to Aroostook Cancer Care at TAMC, she was surprised at a ceremony naming her the recipient of the 2015 Ashland Area Citizen of the Year Award during the annual Summer Fest.
More than 100 take part in patriotic road race part of County Fit and Fun Series
More than 100 children and adults, walkers and runners took part in a patriotic road race on Saturday, July 11 in Presque Isle. The first-ever Freedom Run held in the Star City featured a kids fun run, a 5K (3.1 mile) run or walk; and the 10K (6.2 mile) run, all departing from the Gehrig T. Johnson Athletic Complex at the Presque Isle Middle School.

Fort Fairfield Community Garden Planting; Healing Garden Sod Turning and Family Concert set for July 17
Community members will come together on July 17 at a site in Fort Fairfield where generations of area residents took their first breath, and where many today turn to for healthcare services, to celebrate the beginning of a new collaboration.
New Linear Accelerator arrives at TAMC; installation underway
A significant stride has been made in the progress of the new state-of-the-art cancer treatment center for The County at TAMC that will provide the best, most comprehensive care possible for cancer patients in the region. A new Varian linear accelerator (LINAC) is being installed at TAMC’s A.R. Gould Memorial Hospital which will deliver tumor-shrinking radiation therapy to cancer patients across northern Maine.

Passenger rail’s recent one-day return to The County proved popular, with more than 500 area residents boarding three excursions to benefit pediatric and newborn care locally.
Courage in The County – care providers play crucial role in treatment
When facing a cancer diagnosis, few people have the insight to understand what patients and their loved ones go through more than the providers who share the journey alongside them. Sometimes the doctors and nurses who care for cancer patients are fortunate to share in the happy moments when battles are won, but often the struggle against the vicious disease brings frustration and tears at various stages. Yet, somehow, these providers wake up each morning determined to make a difference in someone’s life, and very often, that’s just what they do.
